League of Legends (LoL) is no stranger to grand celebrations and exclusive content, but the latest move by Riot Games has sparked a wildfire of controversy. The release of a new skin bundle in honor of Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, the most legendary player in LoL history, has left many fans feeling more than a little slighted. With the top-tier bundle priced at an eye-watering $500, the community’s reaction has been loud and clear: outrage.
Faker’s induction into the Hall of Legends—a hall of fame for LoL players—was supposed to be a moment of triumph and celebration. Widely regarded as the greatest League of Legends player of all time, Faker’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary. To commemorate this milestone, Riot Games has launched an in-game event featuring a range of cosmetics themed around the iconic player.
The centerpiece of this event is a new skin for the champion Ahri, bundled with other cosmetics and purchasable at three distinct levels. However, the pricing of these bundles has become the focal point of fan frustration.
At the base level, for 5430 RP (approximately $40), players can acquire the basic version of the Ahri skin along with the champion herself, the event pass, a taunt, a border, an icon, and an emote. This might sound reasonable until you see the other tiers.
For 32430 RP, or around $300, the mid-tier bundle includes additional visual and audio effects to enhance the skin’s appearance. This alone is a steep price for a virtual cosmetic, but it pales in comparison to the top-tier offering.
The highest level of the skin bundle costs a staggering 59260 RP, roughly translating to $500. This ultimate package offers the top version of the skin, extra effects and animations, all 100 levels of the event pass unlocked, and Chromas for other champions. Riot Games has assured players that bundles of RP in these specific amounts will be made available to avoid unnecessary extra purchases.
The fanbase’s reaction to these prices has been overwhelmingly negative. Social media platforms and community forums have been flooded with complaints and expressions of disappointment. Many fans argue that even the most basic bundle is excessively priced compared to other LoL skins, which typically offer significant value at lower price points.
“Riot Games has always been known for their cosmetic microtransactions, but this takes it to a whole new level,” said one disgruntled fan on Reddit. “Celebrating Faker should be inclusive, not a cash grab.”
This backlash highlights a growing disconnect between Riot Games and its player base. While it’s understandable that Riot wants to honor Faker with something special, the exorbitant pricing alienates a significant portion of the community. Many players feel that the company is capitalizing on their admiration for Faker, turning a celebration of esports excellence into an expensive, exclusive event.
For many, League of Legends is more than just a game—it’s a community. Players have invested time, money, and passion into their journey with LoL, and seeing such steep prices can feel like a betrayal. As one player succinctly put it on Twitter, “We love Faker, but not everyone can afford to show it with $500.”
