As companies increasingly adopt AI tools to enhance media quantity and quality, there’s growing curiosity about the implications of integrating AI into human-operated environments. This shift towards advanced technology is expected to influence major corporations, potentially reshaping how activities are managed with AI oversight. Businesses are actively seeking advantages to meet future goals through these technological advancements.
In late May, Vox Media and The Atlantic announced a partnership with OpenAI, allowing OpenAI to train its AI models using the media companies’ content. This agreement not only licenses training data but also mitigates potential copyright issues. The insights gained from these models will directly benefit platforms like ChatGPT. Such partnerships highlight the evolving landscape of AI tools and their potential to revolutionize media creation and consumption.
Though disclosure of the deal has been limited to the public, Vox Media stated that OpenAI will utilize their information, in order to assist with e-commerce products and an ad data platform by the name of Forte. By having OpenAI assistance, they will be able to develop goods dedicated to consumers and improve ad results. On the other hand, Atlantic is said to develop a site called Atlantic Labs where they will have teams to experiment with AI, in order to make journalism efficient and give the readers more mobility. This would mean that the use of AI will account for more detail and perform a defined process when covering articles relating to media.
OpenAI gains access to Vox Media and The Atlantic’s content, optimizing it for publishers and utilizing additional AI tools. The Verge and Vulture, subsidiaries of Vox Media, will also participate in the training process. Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff highlighted ambitions to leverage GenAI to elevate journalism standards and expand opportunities for journalists. Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, emphasized the role of AI in enhancing online discovery and search experiences. The partnership aims to improve search engine visibility for Atlantic news and stories, ensuring broader accessibility and engagement.
The partnership between OpenAI and media companies like Vox Media and Atlantic could lead to more collaborations and address concerns about accuracy in media content. However, the integration of AI tools into media raises questions about its overall benefit, particularly amidst ongoing controversies and legal issues related to copyright. The evolving discourse between humans and AI remains uncertain, and future decisions about using AI in media coverage may require careful consideration of ethical and practical implications. Despite lingering concerns about AI partnerships, it would seem that Vox Media and The Atlantic are pushing towards a bold and proactive step forward.
