Discover Valorant’s First Vertical Battleground: Abyss

By Katherine Duong

Brace yourselves, Valorant fans! Riot Games is about to shake things up with its latest map addition, Abyss. Mark your calendars for June 11, 2024, as this date heralds not just the release of patch 8.11 but also the grand debut of Abyss, a map that promises to redefine how we play Valorant.

Since the release of Sunset on August 29, 2023, players have been eagerly awaiting fresh terrain to master. Abyss, the first vertical map in Valorant, is a thrilling addition that will bring new strategies and countless edge-of-your-seat moments to the game. Imagine the intensity of a fight where not only enemies but the map itself can claim your life!

A New Level of Danger and Strategy

Abyss is reminiscent of Counter-Strike’s Vertigo, with its lack of perimeter walls and the constant threat of falling off the edge. This alone sets the stage for some high-stakes gameplay where every step counts. Riot Games has brilliantly incorporated “jump shortcuts” via jump pads, adding a dynamic layer to how players navigate the map. Whether you’re an aggressive duelist looking to make a daring play or a sentinel setting up traps, Abyss will challenge and inspire new tactics.

Joey Simas, Lead Map Designer at Riot Games, shared some exciting insights: “Imagine a Raze satchel propelling an enemy off the map or Omen utilizing his Shadow Step to navigate around structures in unexpected ways. This clippable play mentality injects a thrilling layer of danger and creativity into the gameplay.” It’s clear that Abyss is not just a new map but a fresh canvas for players to paint their highlight reels.

Layout and Gameplay

Abyss features a three-lane layout with two spike sites, making it familiar yet unique. The middle area, with its multiple branching paths, will be a hot zone for intense skirmishes and strategic plays. Long-ranged engagements will be the norm, so expect sniper rifles to dominate the meta. The open design ensures that positioning and map control will be more critical than ever.

In the chaos of battle, don’t forget the vertical element. Falling off the map means losing your gun, and unlike other maps, you won’t have a chance to pick it up again. Sage mains, take note: falling off Abyss means no revival from your ultimate. However, Riot has balanced this with the spike’s mechanics—it can’t fall off the map but will instead respawn at the edge where the carrier fell, ensuring the game’s flow remains uninterrupted.

The Return of Old Favorites

Alongside the launch of Abyss, patch 8.11 will see the return of Haven to the map rotation. While fans rejoice at Haven’s comeback, Breeze and Split will be taking a break. This rotation keeps the gameplay fresh and ensures that every match feels different and exciting.

Abyss is set to elevate Valorant to new heights—literally. Its vertical design, combined with the absence of protective walls, introduces a perilous yet exhilarating experience that will test even the most seasoned players. Whether you’re plotting your next sneaky maneuver or bracing for a high-risk high-reward play, Abyss promises to be a game-changer.

So gear up, strategize with your team, and get ready to dive into the Abyss. Valorant’s battlegrounds have never been this thrilling. See you on the edge!
